Adding Value

There are technical, economic and regulatory aspects that can influence the end of life of wind infrastructure, with different options being often unique to each decommissioning project. Data evidence on decommissioning and end of life waste management practice is patchy yet data availability at end-of-life is increasingly important, connecting to waste predictions and design aspects related to identification, traceability and documentation of materials. WEELO operates by engaging constructively with existing databases on renewable energy facilities, to add value: by linking to other data sources, on planning applications and the media; by validating existing databases, and establishing collaboration with current data holders and curators) to improve accuracy; and by identifying new, emergent trends. WEELO also tests and validates emergent data collation technologies, including AI software, to assess their utility for cross-sector end-of-life monitoring.
